Effective onboarding sets the foundation for employee success and retention, especially in aged care, where turnover is high and work is complex. Yet, many employers still overlook key elements.

1. Incomplete Paperwork

Missing tax forms, incomplete contracts, or unsigned policy acknowledgments can create legal issues down the track. Use a checklist to keep onboarding consistent.

2. Inadequate Orientation

New hires should be introduced to not only policies and procedures, but also workplace culture, safety protocols, and expectations. A rushed orientation can lead to early resignations.

3. Failing to Provide Award and Entitlements Information

Employees must understand their entitlements under the Aged Care Award 2010 or any relevant enterprise agreements. This should be explained clearly and documented.

4. Not Assigning a Mentor or Buddy

New aged care workers often feel overwhelmed. Assigning a buddy helps them adjust quickly and safely, while improving morale.

5. Lack of Follow-Up

Check in after 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months to review progress and resolve concerns. This reinforces commitment to support and helps retain staff.

6. Ignoring Compliance Documentation

Ensure that employees provide copies of relevant qualifications and that working with vulnerable persons clearances are up to date.
